Our Formula
Definitions:
Total Energy (E) is the energy consumed in the production of all products manufactured within the factory and includes energy from all sources (e.g. electricity and natural gas). Energy should be represented in Megajoules (MJ)
Product (P) is the number of evaluated products being manufactured within the factory. This does not include byproducts or secondary products. For example, if we are evaluating product A in a factory. And the factory manufactures 1000 of product A and 2000 of product B then the Product (P) is only 1000.
Percent Product (Pp) is the percentage of all evaluated products out of all products manufactured within the factory. For example, if product A is being evaluated then Percent Product (Pp) is 33.3%.

The UEL Formula
E (Pp) / P

or
Total Energy (Percent Product) / Product
Continuing the example from above. If we want to calculate the UEL for product A. We determine the factory consumes 10,000 MJ of energy while manufacturing 1000 product A and 2000 product B.
Our variables are as follows:
E = 10,000 MJ
Pp = 33.3%
P = 1000
Our calculation for Product A is as follows:
10,000MJ (33.3%) / 1000 = 3.33MJ per Product

While our calculation for the UEL appears very simple, determining the specifics of each variable can be complex. Each manufacturer will be required to evaluate their manufacturing process and determine the appropriate values for each variable. They will present their calculations and the reasoning behind them to a certifying body. That certifying body’s responsibility is to validate the manufacturers calculations, post the product information on our website and provide the manufacturer with approval to use our label on their product.
